An agricultural expert and a big time farmer in Abia state Chief Isreal Amanze has called on the south east governors to create the enabling environment for farming to strive in the zone. Amanze made the call while interacting with the New Statesman Newspapers in Umuahia. He advised Nigerians especially people of the south east to embrace farming and accept farming as a means of livelihood.
The Senior Adviser to the former governor on Agriculture regretted that people of the zone had neglected farming for a long time, advised Igbo youths to emulate their northern brothers and embrace farming, assured that there is money in the business
He used the occasion to appeal to the south east governors to provide a better environment for farming to strive, “I am begging our governors to provide irrigation for all year farming, good and motor-able roads and provide improved seedlings for planting. We need to begin to feed ourselves”. He stressed on the need for exportation of farm produce and appreciated the Anambra and federal government for the exportation of yam and vegetables, he called on other state government to follow suit.
Chief Amanze blamed the federal government over the continuous Fulani herdsmen destruction of farm land, raping and killing of innocent Nigeria across the country. He disclosed that the federal government silence over several killings have embolden the herdsmen to take laws into their hands with impunity.
“The federal government have not done their duties well, as they have allowed herdsmen to continued to kill and destroy farm lands, they carry Ak47 and government would not say anything, but ordinary man with knife is arrested and sent to prison. “Sometime this year I woke up to discover that the herdsmen have invaded my massive farm land and destroyed crops worth millions of Naira, which I then fenced. They destroyed the fence and gained entrance before finally using wall fence all round with gate”.
He added that in the absence of secession, restructuring should be the answer to Nigeria problem while he called on governors to without delay sign into law the anti grazing bill to bring to an end Fulani herdsmen impunity.
